Colchicum coloratum

rooi patrysblom

Stemless cormous geophyte. Leaves egg-shaped and flat on the ground; sometimes hairy. Flowers (July to August) are enclosed in large red, purple or green and white bracts. Filaments are purple.

The subspecies with green and white bracts surrounding the flowers that occurs in the Hex is known as C. coloratum burchelli.

Distribution in the Hex

Gravelly flats of De Doorns Renosterveld Karoo.
